Overview

Water is constantly moving between the oceans, atmosphere, land and ice in a vast recycling system that has no beginning or end. This continuous movement, the hydrological cycle, drives the rivers, shapes the valleys and sustains every ecosystem on Earth.

The glass of water you drink today contains molecules that once fell as rain on ancient forests, froze inside glaciers and evaporated from tropical oceans. Nothing is added, nothing is lost: it simply moves from place to place in a closed system called the hydrological cycle.
