Hardware And Software

Overview

Two computers can be identical in every physical respect and be completely different machines to use. One runs a till in a shop, one edits video, and the metal, silicon and plastic inside them are the same. That is the most important fact in this whole specification, and it has a name: the division between hardware and software. A computer is not one thing, it is two things that need each other, and neither is any use on its own.

This lesson defines both terms precisely enough to survive an exam question, works through the cases people get wrong, and then does the harder and more interesting part: explaining the relationship between the two. You will finish able to classify anything you are shown, to justify the classification rather than assert it, and to explain why the separation is what makes a computer a general purpose machine rather than a very expensive single purpose one.

Objectives

  1. Define the terms hardware and software and understand the relationship between them.

Lesson Note

Picture a laptop on a desk. Everything about it that has weight, that could be dropped, that would show up on an X-ray, is hardware: the screen, the keyboard, the processor, the memory chips, the drive, the battery, the case, the cable. Hardware is the physical components that make up a computer system, and the test is blunt: if you could pick it up, it is hardware.

  2. Which of these items is software? A. A graphics card B. A device driver C. A network cable D. A monitor Answer: B
  3. A file is saved onto a hard disk. How should the file and the disk be classified? A. Both are hardware B. Both are software C. The file is software or data and the disk is hardware D. The file is hardware and the disk is software Answer: C
  4. Why can two computers with identical hardware behave completely differently? A. Because hardware changes over time B. Because the software installed on them determines what they do C. Because software has a physical form D. Because hardware cannot be replaced Answer: B
  5. What happens if a computer with fully working hardware has no software at all? A. It runs more quickly because nothing is loaded B.
