Commercial Calculations

Overview

Every commercial transaction involves numbers, from the price printed on a label to the profit recorded in a set of accounts. Knowing how to calculate mark-up, margin, discounts and stock turnover lets you judge whether a deal is fair, a product is priced correctly, and a business is trading efficiently.

In this lesson you will learn the formulas that underpin everyday commerce: trade and cash discounts, profit and loss, mark-up and margin, turnover, rate of stock turnover, commission, currency conversions, and simple interest. These calculations appear throughout the Commerce exam, so confidence with them is essential.

Objectives

  1. Understand the concept and calculation of gross profit, profit for the year (net profit), mark-up, average inventory and inventory turnover

Lesson Note

A market trader buys a crate of mangoes for $40 and sells them for $60. The profit is $20, but is that a 50% return or a 33% return? The answer depends on whether you express the profit as a percentage of what you paid (mark-up) or what you sold for (margin). Commerce exams test both, and mixing them up is one of the most common errors candidates make. This lesson gives you a clear method for every calculation the specification requires.
