Movement Of Substances Into And Out Of Cells

Overview

Cells do not exist in isolation. They constantly exchange substances with their surroundings: taking in oxygen and nutrients, releasing carbon dioxide and waste products. Three transport mechanisms make this possible, and each works in a fundamentally different way.

In this lesson you will learn how diffusion, osmosis and active transport move substances into and out of cells. You will explore the factors that affect transport rates, discover why plants wilt and animal cells burst, and design practical investigations to observe these processes first-hand.

  2. Understand how factors affect the rate of movement of substances into and out of cells, including the effects of surface area to volume ratio, distance, temperature and concentration gradient
  3. Investigate diffusion and osmosis using living and non-living systems

Lesson Note

Substances cross cell membranes by three mechanisms: diffusion, osmosis and active transport. The first two are passive (they need no energy from the cell), while active transport requires energy from respiration.
