Market Research

Overview

Before a business spends money developing a product, it needs to know whether anyone will actually buy it. Market research turns guesswork into evidence by collecting and analysing information about customers, competitors and the wider market. Getting it right can mean the difference between a best-seller and a costly failure.

In this lesson you will learn the difference between primary and secondary research, explore methods such as questionnaires, focus groups and published data, and understand how businesses choose the right approach to reduce risk and spot opportunities. You will also practise evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of different research techniques - a skill tested regularly on the Edexcel Business papers.

Objectives

  1. Understand the purpose of market research: to identify and understand customer needs, to identify gaps in the market, to reduce risk, to inform business decisions
  2. Understand methods of market research: primary research (survey, questionnaire, focus group, observation, test marketing) and secondary research (internet, market reports, government reports)
  3. Understand the use of data in market research: qualitative and quantitative data, the role of social media in collecting market research data, the importance of the reliability of market research data

Lesson Note

In 1985, Coca-Cola reformulated its signature drink after taste tests suggested consumers preferred a sweeter flavour. The new product flopped spectacularly because the research had missed something crucial: customers were emotionally attached to the original. The episode is a classic reminder that market research is essential, but only if you ask the right questions in the right way.
