Transport

Overview

Every product you buy has travelled - sometimes across continents - before reaching your hands. Transport is the vital link that connects producers, wholesalers, retailers and consumers, making the entire chain of distribution possible. Without efficient transport, goods would sit unsold in factories and raw materials would never reach the production line.

In this lesson you will explore the five main modes of transport used in commerce, discover when each one is the best choice, and learn how containerisation revolutionised global trade. You will also examine the advantages of businesses owning their own fleets and the key documents that accompany goods on their journey.

Objectives

  1. Understand the importance of transport in the chain of distribution
  2. Understand different forms of transport available to commerce: road, rail, sea, air, inland waterway, pipelines
  3. Understand different modes of transport used for different forms: road, rail, air, sea, containerisation
  4. Understand the benefits to a business of having its own transport
  5. Understand the efficiency of different forms of transport in terms of speed, reliability, safety, situation, convenience, optimising routes

Lesson Note

A single smartphone contains components sourced from over thirty countries. Rare-earth minerals travel by ship from mines in central Africa, microchips fly by air from fabrication plants in East Asia, and the finished device rolls off a truck at a retail warehouse near your home. Each leg of that journey depends on choosing the right mode of transport for the right cargo at the right cost. Understanding these choices is at the heart of commercial efficiency.
