Meiosis

Overview

If gametes had the full set of chromosomes, every fertilisation would double the number, and life would quickly become impossible. Meiosis solves this: it is the special cell division that halves the chromosome number to make gametes, and along the way it shuffles the genetic deck so that no two gametes are quite the same.

In this short Extended lesson you will state that meiosis makes gametes and define it as a reduction division that halves the chromosome number from diploid to haploid, producing genetically different cells.

Objectives

  1. [Supplement] State that meiosis is involved in the production of gametes
  2. [Supplement] Describe meiosis as a reduction division in which the chromosome number is halved from diploid to haploid resulting in genetically different cells (details of the stages of meiosis are not required)
