The Global Patterns Of Energy Supply And Demand

Overview

The world's hunger for energy never stops growing. Factories, cars, phones and air conditioners all draw on it, and as countries develop they draw far more. Yet energy is spread unevenly: some nations sit on huge reserves while others import almost everything, and a sudden price spike or pipeline dispute can shake whole economies.

In this lesson you will learn why global energy production and consumption keep rising, what energy surplus, deficit and security mean, and why a wealthy country uses such a different mix of fuels from a poorer one. These patterns explain much of today's geopolitics.

Objectives

  1. Reasons for the increasing global production and consumption of energy.
  2. The global patterns of energy surplus and deficit and the importance of energy security.
  3. The reasons for variations in types of energy used within a country and between countries at different levels of development.

Lesson Note

Energy patterns connect geography to economics and politics. Examiners expect you to explain why demand is rising, to read maps and graphs of energy surplus and deficit, and to account for the very different energy mixes of rich and poor countries. These ideas underpin the impacts and case-study work that follow.
