The Electromagnetic Spectrum

Overview

Visible light is just one small part of a much larger family of waves. From radio waves to gamma rays, the electromagnetic spectrum spans an enormous range of wavelengths and frequencies, each with its own uses and dangers.

In this lesson you will learn the order of the electromagnetic spectrum, the uses of each type of radiation, the harmful effects of excessive exposure, and the protective measures that reduce those risks.

Objectives

  1. Know that light is part of a continuous electromagnetic spectrum
  2. Know the order of the electromagnetic spectrum in terms of decreasing wavelength and increasing frequency
  3. Explain some of the uses of electromagnetic radiations
  4. Explain the detrimental effects of excessive exposure of the human body to electromagnetic waves and describe simple protective measures

Lesson Note

Your eyes detect only a narrow band of electromagnetic radiation. On either side of visible light lie waves you cannot see but use every day, from the radio signals in your phone to the X-rays that image broken bones.
