Tourism Is A Growing Industry
Overview
In 1950 just twenty-five million people crossed a border as tourists. By 2012 the figure had passed one billion in a single year, and it keeps climbing. Cheaper flights, longer holidays and fatter wallets have turned travel from a luxury of the rich into one of the largest industries on Earth, earning over a trillion dollars a year. For many countries a beach, a reef or a ruined temple is now their most valuable resource.
In this lesson you will learn why tourism has grown so fast, how the Butler model tracks a resort from quiet discovery to overcrowded decline, and how to weigh the jobs and foreign currency tourism brings against the pollution, leakage and cultural strain it causes, before judging the strategies, including ecotourism, that try to keep it sustainable, using a named country as your case study.
