Respiration

Overview

Every living cell needs a continuous supply of energy, and respiration is the process that provides it. Whether you are sprinting or sleeping, your cells are breaking down glucose to release the ATP that powers everything from muscle contraction to nerve impulses.

In this lesson you will compare aerobic and anaerobic respiration, learn their equations, understand why ATP matters, and explore a classic practical for detecting the products of respiration in living organisms.

Objectives

  1. Understand how the process of respiration produces ATP in living organisms
  2. Know that ATP provides energy for cells
  3. Describe the differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
  4. Know the word equation and the balanced chemical symbol equation for aerobic respiration in living organisms
  5. Know the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and in animals
  6. Investigate the evolution of carbon dioxide and heat from respiring seeds or other suitable living organisms

Lesson Note

A marathon runner and a germinating seed have something fundamental in common: both depend on respiration to keep their cells working. Respiration is not breathing. It is a chemical reaction inside every living cell that releases energy from glucose and transfers it to a molecule called ATP. Understanding this distinction is one of the most common exam points in biology.
