Group 7 (halogens) - Chlorine, Bromine And Iodine

Overview

Chlorine disinfects swimming pools, bromine was once used in photographic film, and iodine is dabbed onto cuts as an antiseptic. These elements belong to Group 7 of the Periodic Table - the halogens - a family of reactive non-metals whose properties follow striking patterns.

In this lesson you will learn the colours and physical states of chlorine, bromine, and iodine, explore the trends in their physical and chemical properties, and use those trends to predict the behaviour of halogens you have never encountered.

Objectives

  1. Know the colours, physical states (at room temperature) and trends in physical properties of these elements
  2. Use knowledge of trends in Group 7 to predict the properties of other halogens

Lesson Note

Group 7 sits near the right-hand side of the Periodic Table. Its members - fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At) - are called the halogens. They all have seven electrons in their outer shell and exist as diatomic molecules (pairs of atoms bonded together: Cl₂, Br₂, I₂).
