Congruence

Overview

Two shapes are congruent when they are identical in both shape and size: one can be placed exactly on top of the other by a turn, a flip or a slide. Congruence is the precise way to say two figures are truly the same.

In this lesson you will recognize congruent figures and use the standard conditions for congruent triangles to prove that two triangles match, then use that fact to find unknown lengths and angles.

Objectives

  1. Recognize that two shapes are congruent and use congruence to solve problems.

Lesson Note

Congruence is the foundation of geometric proof. Once two triangles are shown to be congruent, every pair of matching sides and angles is equal, which solves a great many problems in one step.
