Soft Furnishings
Overview
Interior textiles are the only textiles that stay still while everything else moves around them. A curtain hangs in the same window for ten years, catching morning light on one edge, and a sofa cover is sat on several thousand times a year by people who never think about it. Nothing else in this subject is asked to last that long or withstand that much, and nothing else has to be judged from across a room.
This note is about cloth designed for a space rather than for a body. You will cover the physical properties that decide whether an interior textile survives, the way light and viewing distance change what a pattern does, how curtain fullness and pattern repeat turn a design into metres of cloth, and the tactile role that textiles play in a hard room full of glass, plaster and timber.
