Electric Charge

Overview

Rub a balloon on your jumper and it sticks to the wall. Slide across a car seat on a dry day and a tiny spark jumps from your fingertip to the door handle. These everyday surprises are your first encounter with static electricity, a phenomenon that also powers photocopiers, cleans factory smoke, and poses real dangers when fuelling aircraft.

This topic explains how objects become charged, why charged objects attract or repel each other, and how we represent these forces using electric field lines. You will learn to distinguish conductors from insulators, trace the movement of electrons during charging by friction, and connect the physics to both its hazards and its practical applications.

Objectives

  1. Identify common materials that are electrical conductors or insulators, including metals and plastics
  2. Investigate how insulating materials can be charged by friction
  3. Explain how positive and negative electrostatic charges are produced on materials by the loss and gain of electrons
  4. Know that there are forces of attraction between unlike charges and forces of repulsion between like charges
  5. Explain electrostatic phenomena in terms of the movement of electrons
  6. Explain the potential dangers of electrostatic charges, e.g. when fuelling aircraft and tankers
  7. Explain some uses of electrostatic charges, e.g. in photocopiers and inkjet printers

Lesson Note

Lightning bolts, clinging cling film, the crackle when you pull off a polyester shirt - all of these trace back to electric charge. Unlike current electricity, which flows continuously through wires, static electricity builds up on the surface of materials and stays put until it finds a path to escape. Understanding how charge accumulates, moves, and exerts forces is essential for explaining phenomena from the laboratory bench to the fuel depot.
