Output Devices And Their Uses

Overview

Once a computer has finished processing, it has to communicate the result, to a person or to a machine. The screen you are reading, the printer in the office, the projector in a lecture hall and the motor that opens a car-park barrier are all output devices, each turning the computer's digital signals into something useful in the real world. Choosing the right one decides whether a document looks crisp, a presentation reaches a whole hall, or a control system actually moves a valve.

In this lesson you will meet the output devices the Cambridge syllabus requires: monitors, touch screens (as output), multimedia projectors, laser, inkjet and dot matrix printers, plotters, 3D printers, speakers and actuators. You will learn how each works, where it is used, and how to weigh quality, speed, cost and purpose so you can justify the best device for any situation.

Objectives

  1. Output devices.
  2. Characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of output devices including: monitors, touch screen (as an output device), multimedia projector, laser printer, inkjet printer, dot matrix printer, plotter, 3D printers, speaker, actuator.

Lesson Note

An output device is how a computer's work reaches the world. Pick the wrong one and a system fails its purpose: a noisy dot matrix printer is useless for a glossy photo, and an inkjet is hopeless for a huge print run. Examiners give you scenarios, a busy office printing thousands of invoices, an architect needing large accurate drawings, a factory line needing to open a valve, and expect you to name the right device and say why. Knowing each device's characteristics and trade-offs is what earns those marks.
