The World Is Developing Unevenly
Overview
The world's wealth is shared with startling unevenness. A child born in one country can expect a long, schooled, comfortable life; a child born in another, sometimes only a short flight away, faces poverty, a shorter life and little schooling. This difference between the richest and poorest countries is called the development gap, and it is one of the central concerns of human geography.
In this lesson you will learn how the world divides into low, middle and high income countries, where these groups are found, and why development is so uneven. You will explore the social, economic and environmental reasons behind the gap, from colonial history and trade to climate, conflict and geography itself.
