Radioactivity And Particles: Units

Overview

Radioactive sources do not switch on and off like a lamp. They decay continuously, and measuring how quickly that happens requires its own set of units. A hospital physicist tracking a tracer dose and a geologist dating an ancient rock both rely on the same handful of quantities and units.

This lesson covers the units the Edexcel specification expects you to use in the Radioactivity and Particles section, from the becquerel for activity to the everyday time units that appear in half-life calculations. You will practise converting between seconds, minutes, and hours so that substitution into decay equations stays error-free.

Objectives

  1. Use the following units: becquerel (Bq), centimetre (cm), hour (h), minute (min) and second (s)

Lesson Note

When a radioactive nucleus decays, it emits a particle or photon. A Geiger counter clicks each time it detects one. The number of decays happening every second tells you how active the source is, and that quantity - activity - has its own SI unit. The units in this section are few, but getting the time conversions right is critical for half-life problems, and one unit here, the centimetre, describes something quite different: how far a type of radiation can travel before it is absorbed.

Lesson Evaluation

Congratulations on completing the lesson on Radioactivity And Particles: Units. Now that youve explored the key concepts and ideas, its time to put your knowledge to the test. This section offers a variety of practice questions designed to reinforce your understanding and help you gauge your grasp of the material.

You will encounter a mix of question types, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and essay questions. Each question is thoughtfully crafted to assess different aspects of your knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Use this evaluation section as an opportunity to reinforce your understanding of the topic and to identify any areas where you may need additional study. Don't be discouraged by any challenges you encounter; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and improvement.

  1. What does one becquerel (Bq) represent? A) One gram of radioactive material B) One decay per second C) One count per minute D) One half-life Answer: B
  2. How many seconds are in 2.5 hours? A) 150 B) 250 C) 1500 D) 9000 Answer: D
  3. A source has an activity of 1600 Bq. After two half-lives, the activity is: A) 800 Bq B) 400 Bq C) 200 Bq D) 100 Bq Answer: B
  4. What is the difference between activity and count rate? A) Activity is measured in count/s, count rate in Bq B) Activity is the true decay rate; count rate is what the detector records C) Count rate is always higher than activity D) There is no difference Answer: B
  5. A half-life is 40 minutes. How many half-lives occur in 3 hours? A) 3 B) 4 C) 4.5 D) 7.5 Answer: C
