Algebraic Manipulation

Overview

Algebraic manipulation is the housekeeping of algebra: tidying expressions so they are as simple as possible. Collecting like terms, expanding brackets and factorising are the three core moves, and almost every later technique relies on doing them quickly and accurately.

In this lesson you will simplify expressions by collecting like terms, expand products of brackets, and factorise by taking out common factors. These skills are the toolkit for solving equations and working with formulas.

Objectives

  1. Simplify expressions by collecting like terms.
  2. Expand products of algebraic expressions.
  3. Factorise by extracting common factors.

Lesson Note

Simplifying first makes everything that follows easier and less error-prone. Expanding and factorising are inverse skills you will use constantly in equations, graphs and proof.
