Alkanes

Overview

Alkanes are the simplest organic molecules - chains of carbon atoms bonded to nothing but hydrogen. They burn well, which makes them excellent fuels, but they are otherwise remarkably unreactive. Natural gas, petrol, and candle wax are all alkanes.

In this lesson you will learn the general formula for alkanes, why they are called saturated hydrocarbons, and how to draw and name the first five members of the series. You will also explore their combustion reactions and physical property trends.

Lesson Note

Light a gas hob and you are burning methane. Fill a car with petrol and you are using octane. Strike a match and the wax tip contains long-chain alkanes. These molecules are everywhere because they are the backbone of fossil fuels and the starting point for much of organic chemistry.
