Graphs In Practical Situations

Overview

Graphs are not just abstract curves: they tell stories about the real world. A travel graph shows a whole journey at a glance, a conversion graph turns one unit into another, and the steepness of a line carries real meaning such as speed.

In this lesson you will use and interpret graphs in practical situations, including travel and conversion graphs, and draw graphs from given data. (At Extended you will link gradients and areas to speed, acceleration and distance on kinematics graphs.)

Objectives

  1. Use and interpret graphs in practical situations including travel graphs and conversion graphs.
  2. Draw graphs from given data.
  3. Apply the idea of rate of change to simple kinematics involving distance-time and speed-time graphs, acceleration and deceleration. (Extended only)
  4. Calculate distance travelled as area under a speed-time graph. (Extended only)
