The Main Components Of Computer Systems
Overview
Strip a computer down to its essentials and four parts do almost all the work: the central processing unit that thinks, the two kinds of internal memory that hold what it is thinking about, and the backing storage that remembers everything when the power goes off. Understanding how these pieces pass data to one another, and why some forget instantly while others never do, is the key to understanding how every computer behaves.
In this lesson you will follow data as it enters through input devices, is processed by the CPU, moves between RAM and ROM, and is saved to a hard disk or solid-state drive before the results leave through output devices. You will learn the precise differences between RAM and ROM, between input and output devices, and between fast internal memory and large backing storage, the exact comparisons that ICT exams ask for again and again.
