Water Cycle

Overview

Every drop of water a farmer uses, the rain on the fields, the river feeding an irrigation channel, the water pumped from a well, is part of one endless journey. Driven by the Sun, water rises from the sea, lakes and plants as vapour, gathers into clouds, and falls again as rain. Some soaks into the ground to refill the underground stores that wells tap, and some runs off to the rivers. This is the water cycle, and it is the reason fresh water keeps arriving on the land.

In this lesson you will follow water through evaporation, transpiration, condensation and precipitation, and on into the soil and the groundwater beneath it. You will see why the cycle matters so much to farming, how rainfall, run-off and groundwater shape what can be grown, and why protecting and not over-using these water resources is essential for farms now and in the future.

Objectives

  1. (a) describe and understand the significance of the water cycle and ground-water resources.

Lesson Note

Farming runs on water, and almost all of it comes from the water cycle. The rain that waters rain-fed crops, the rivers and reservoirs that supply irrigation, and the groundwater that fills wells and boreholes are all stages of the same cycle. Understanding it helps a farmer see where the water comes from, why droughts and floods happen, and why the underground water store is a resource that can be used up if it is pumped faster than the cycle refills it.
