Measures

Overview

Measures connect mathematics to the physical world. Every time you read a thermometer, time a race, estimate the height of a building or calculate how fast a car is travelling, you are applying the ideas in this topic. Fluency with scales, units and compound measures is essential across science, geography and everyday life.

You will learn to read scales accurately, convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time, estimate real-world quantities sensibly, measure and describe angles using three-figure bearings, and work with the compound measures speed, density and pressure using their defining formulae.

Objectives

  1. Interpret scales on a range of measuring instruments
  2. Calculate time intervals in terms of the 24-hour and the 12-hour clock
  3. Make sensible estimates of a range of measures
  4. Understand angle measure including three-figure bearings
  5. Measure an angle to the nearest degree
  6. Understand and use the relationship between average speed, distance and time
  7. Use compound measure such as speed, density and pressure

Lesson Note

A nurse reads a thermometer graduated in half-degree intervals. A pilot reports a heading of 072 degrees to air-traffic control. An engineer calculates whether a bridge can withstand a pressure of 850 kPa. Behind each of these tasks lies the same skill: extracting a reliable number from a measuring instrument or formula and knowing what it means.
