Equations Of Linear Graphs

Overview

Every straight line can be captured in one tidy equation, \(y = mx + c\), where two numbers tell you everything: the gradient and where the line crosses the y-axis. Read those two numbers and you can draw the line; draw the line and you can read them back.

In this lesson you will interpret and find the equation of a straight-line graph in the form \(y = mx + c\), identifying the gradient and the y-intercept.

Objectives

  1. Interpret and obtain the equation of a straight-line graph in the form y = mx + c.
  2. Interpret and obtain the equation of a straight-line graph. (Extended only)

Lesson Note

The equation y = mx + c is the compact summary of a whole line. Reading and writing it connects gradient, intercept and graph, and is the basis of parallel, perpendicular and simultaneous-line work.
