Speech Preparation And Delivery

Overview

Ten minutes is longer than you think and shorter than you need. Stand up with a subject and no shape and the first two minutes will be spent apologising, the middle five will wander, and the last three will be a scramble for somewhere to stop. Stand up with a spine and the same ten minutes will feel like a conversation you happen to be leading.

This note is about the prepared talk: choosing something that will survive being spoken about for that long, building a structure an audience can follow without notes, writing sentences that work in the ear rather than on the page, and delivering them in spoken Standard English to a room that is listening. The questions that come afterwards are a separate skill and have a note of their own.

Objectives

  1. Demonstrate presentation skills in a formal setting
  2. Use spoken Standard English effectively in speeches and presentations
  3. Give a prepared spoken language presentation lasting no longer than 10 minutes
  4. Present a speech or talk followed by questions from the audience

Lesson Note

The Spoken Language endorsement is optional, and taking it is one of the better decisions available on this course. It is assessed separately from the written examination and it does not affect your qualification grade at all: it appears on your certificate as its own reported result of Not Classified, Pass, Merit or Distinction. There are no marks. Your teacher assesses you against a set of criteria, either live or from a recording, and Pearson externally monitors a recorded sample of students from every centre.
