Geometric Constructions

Overview

A formal geometric construction uses only a pair of compasses and a straight edge, no protractor, no ruler markings. With those two tools you can bisect a line exactly in half, or split an angle into two equal parts, with perfect accuracy.

In this lesson you will make the two key constructions the syllabus asks for: the perpendicular bisector of a line segment and the bisector of an angle. Understanding why each set of arcs works makes the steps easy to remember and reproduce.

Lesson Note

Constructions are how geometry is done without measurement: equal lengths and equal angles are guaranteed by the compass, not estimated. They also build the habit of precise, step-by-step working.
