Soils And Crop Growth

Overview

Scratch the surface of a field and you find one of the most valuable resources on Earth: soil. It is far more than dirt. A handful holds mineral grains, decaying leaves, water, air and millions of living organisms, all working together to feed the plants that feed us. Get the soil right and crops thrive; get it wrong and even the best seed and fertiliser will fail.

In this lesson you will learn what soil is actually made of, why a loam soil is prized by growers, and how weather and the seasons set the pace of crop growth through photosynthesis. By the end you should be able to explain why one field yields a heavy harvest while a neighbouring one struggles, using the language an examiner expects.

Objectives

  1. 2.1.1 Describe the composition of soils, limited to: (a) mineral particles: sand, silt and clay (b) organic content: living organisms (plants, animals, fungi and bacteria) and organic matter from decomposition (c) gases (d) water. Knowledge of percentage composition of soils is not required.
  2. 2.1.3 Explain why loam soils are a good medium for crop growth, limited to: (a) ideal combination of mineral particles and pore spaces (b) retains moisture (c) contains organic content and inorganic ions (d) allows excess water to drain (e) easy to cultivate.
  3. 2.1.4 Define weather as the day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere in a location.
  4. 2.1.5 State that some areas of the world experience wet seasons and dry seasons that impact crop growth.
  5. 2.1.6 Describe and interpret conditions suitable for the optimum rate of photosynthesis and crop growth, limited to: (a) length of growing season (b) optimum weather conditions (c) daylight hours.

Lesson Note

Almost all the food in the world is grown in soil, yet good soil takes hundreds of years to form and can be ruined in a single season. Understanding what soil is made of, and what crops need from it, is the first step in feeding a growing population without wrecking the land. In the exam, this topic underpins later questions on food production, soil erosion and sustainability, so the ideas here are worth mastering early.
