Overview

A savings account that grows by the same amount each month, the number of tiles needed as a patio grows ring by ring, a population that doubles at fixed intervals: patterns like these are sequences, and spotting the rule behind them lets you predict any term without listing every one in between.

This topic trains you to recognise sequences built from a common difference, to recognise the handful of integer sequences that appear again and again in mathematics, and to continue any given sequence confidently, including ones where the pattern is not obvious at first glance.

Lesson Note

A sequence is a list of numbers, called terms, arranged in a definite order according to some rule. Once the rule is identified, the sequence can be continued indefinitely, or a specific term far along the list can be found without writing out everything before it.
