Overview

Sprint for the bus and your muscles keep working long after your lungs can supply enough oxygen to fully power them. That is only possible because cells have two ways to release energy from glucose: a slow, complete route that needs oxygen, and a fast, incomplete backup route that does not. This topic covers both, the molecule that actually carries the released energy to where it is needed, and the practical evidence, from your own breath, that respiration is happening right now.

Lesson Note

Every cell needs a constant supply of energy to build molecules, contract muscle fibres, transmit nerve impulses and maintain a stable internal temperature. Respiration is the chemical process, occurring continuously in every living cell, that releases this energy from glucose. It is not the same thing as breathing: breathing (ventilation) moves air in and out of the lungs, while respiration is the cellular chemistry that actually uses the oxygen that breathing supplies.
