Modelling

Overview

It is far cheaper to discover a problem in a piece of card than in a finished product. Modelling is the designer's way of making ideas real enough to test before committing to expensive materials and time. A model can be a quick block of foam that checks whether a handle feels right in the hand, or a fully working prototype that proves the whole product functions. Either way, the point is the same: build something you can look at, hold and test, then let what you learn improve the design.

This note covers the 0445 modelling objectives: the reasons designers make models in the first place; the different types of model, from rough exploratory models to full prototypes; and how to use a model to draw real conclusions that change the design. Concrete examples show how a model earns its keep by revealing things a drawing never could.

Lesson Note

A drawing, however careful, is still flat and silent. It cannot tell you whether a product feels comfortable to hold, whether two parts actually clear each other when they move, whether the proportions look right in three dimensions, or whether a mechanism really works. A model - a physical, often simplified, version of a design - answers exactly these questions. Designers model for several connected reasons:
