Introduction

Overview

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-based compounds, and it underpins everything from the fuels that power transport to the plastics in your phone case. Understanding how organic molecules are named, drawn and grouped into families is the foundation for every topic that follows in this section.

In this lesson you will learn how to represent organic molecules using five different types of formula, explore the concept of homologous series and functional groups, identify isomers, and classify organic reactions into three categories. These are core skills tested repeatedly across the Edexcel papers.

Objectives

  1. Know that a hydrocarbon is a compound of hydrogen and carbon only
  2. Understand how to represent organic molecules using empirical, molecular, general, structural and displayed formulae
  3. Know what is meant by the terms: homologous series, functional group and isomerism
  4. Understand how to name compounds using IUPAC nomenclature
  5. Understand how to write the possible structural and displayed formulae of an organic molecule given its molecular formula
  6. Understand how to classify reactions of organic compounds as substitution, addition and combustion

Lesson Note

Carbon atoms can form four covalent bonds and link together in chains, rings and branches. This versatility produces millions of different compounds - far more than any other element. Organic chemistry is the study of these carbon-based compounds, and it covers everything from simple fuels like methane to complex medicines and polymers.
