Polygons

Overview

Polygons range from the humble triangle to shapes with dozens of sides. Understanding their angle properties, symmetry and naming conventions opens the door to multi-step geometry questions that combine several rules at once.

You will learn the properties of common quadrilaterals, calculate interior and exterior angles of regular polygons, and understand what it means for two shapes to be congruent. These facts are tested regularly on both papers.

Objectives

  1. Recognise and give the names of polygons
  2. Understand and use the term 'quadrilateral' and the angle sum property of quadrilaterals
  3. Understand and use the properties of the parallelogram, rectangle, square, rhombus, trapezium and kite
  4. Understand the term 'regular polygon' and calculate interior and exterior angles of regular polygons
  5. Understand and use the angle sum of polygons
  6. Understand congruence as meaning the same shape and size
  7. Understand that two or more polygons with the same shape and size are said to be congruent to each other

Lesson Note

Floor tiles, road signs, honeycomb cells: polygons surround us. Each polygon is a closed, flat shape made of straight sides, and its properties depend on the number of sides it has.
