Conservation And Management Of Energy Resources

Overview

The cleanest unit of energy is the one you never use. As the world's demand for power climbs and fossil reserves shrink, simply building more power stations is not enough. We also have to use energy far more carefully and find new, cleaner ways to produce it. From insulating a roof to switching to an electric car, from energy-efficient fridges to brand-new hydrogen fuels, the choices we make now decide how long our resources will last.

In this lesson you will learn the main strategies for conserving and managing energy: reducing consumption, insulation, efficient devices, education, transport policy and battery storage. You will also study the newest energy technologies, blue and green hydrogen and ground and air source heat pumps, and weigh the benefits and limitations of each approach, using the Passivhaus low-energy building standard as a real example.

Lesson Note

Conserving energy saves money, cuts the pollution and carbon dioxide that come from burning fuel, and makes finite reserves last longer. It also narrows the energy gap, the danger that demand outstrips supply and causes power cuts or fuel shortages. Because conservation can be done by individuals, businesses and governments together, it is one of the most powerful tools we have for a sustainable energy future.
