Types Of Markets Continued

Overview

What happens when a market has just one seller? With no rivals to keep it honest, a monopoly can set its own price and decide how much to produce. Sometimes that means lower costs and big investment in innovation; sometimes it means high prices, less choice and a lazy firm with no reason to improve.

In this lesson you will learn the characteristics of a monopoly, why high barriers to entry let a single firm survive, and how being the only supplier affects price, quality, choice and profit. You will weigh the real advantages of monopoly against its real costs to consumers, and reach a balanced judgement, exactly the skill examiners reward in evaluation questions.

Objectives

  1. characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of monopoly markets
  2. effect of having only one firm on price, quality, choice, profit

Lesson Note

Monopoly is the opposite extreme to perfect competition, and comparing the two reveals how market structure shapes the outcomes consumers experience: the prices they pay, the choice they have and the quality they receive. It also explains why governments sometimes step in to control powerful firms.
