Motion In The Universe

Overview

From the Moon circling the Earth to distant comets swinging past the Sun, every orbit in the universe is governed by gravity. Understanding how gravitational field strength varies and how orbital speed relates to radius and period lets you describe motion at every scale.

In this lesson you will learn about the structure of the universe, why gravitational field strength differs between planets, how gravity keeps objects in orbit, the differences between the orbits of comets, moons and planets, and how to calculate orbital speed.

Objectives

  1. Know that the universe is a large collection of billions of galaxies and a galaxy is a large collection of billions of stars
  2. Understand why gravitational field strength g varies and know that it is different on other planets and the Moon
  3. Explain that gravitational force causes moons to orbit planets, planets to orbit the Sun, artificial satellites to orbit the Earth and comets to orbit the Sun
  4. Describe the differences in the orbits of comets, moons and planets
  5. Use the relationship between orbital speed, orbital radius and time period

Lesson Note

Look up on a clear night and you see a handful of the billions of stars in our galaxy. The Milky Way is itself just one of billions of galaxies in the observable universe. At every scale, gravity is the force that holds these structures together and keeps objects moving in orbits.
