Mains Electricity

Overview

The mains supply powers almost every appliance in your home. Understanding how it works and the safety features that protect you is both practically useful and a key part of the Edexcel specification.

In this lesson you will learn the difference between a.c. and d.c., how insulation, earthing, fuses and circuit breakers keep you safe, why resistors heat up, and how to calculate electrical power and energy transferred.

Objectives

  1. Understand how the use of insulation, double insulation, earthing, fuses and circuit breakers protects the device or user
  2. Understand why a current in a resistor results in the electrical transfer of energy and an increase in temperature
  3. Know and use the relationship: power = current x voltage
  4. Use the relationship: energy transferred = current x voltage x time
  5. Know the difference between mains electricity being alternating current (a.c.) and direct current (d.c.)

Lesson Note

Every time you plug in a kettle or charge a phone, you are connecting to the mains electricity supply. It delivers energy at high voltage, which means even a brief fault can be dangerous. That is why every plug, cable and appliance is designed with multiple layers of protection.
