Types Of Computer

Overview

A computer no longer means a beige box under a desk. It might be a powerful desktop, a slim laptop, a smartphone in your pocket, a tablet on the sofa or a phablet somewhere in between. Each design makes a different bargain between power, price and portability, and choosing the right one for a job is a genuinely useful skill.

In this lesson you will learn the characteristics and uses of desktop computers and of the four kinds of mobile computer, and you will be able to weigh their advantages and disadvantages. By the end you will be able to recommend the best type of computer for a given person or task and justify your choice, which is exactly what ICT exam questions ask you to do.

Objectives

  1. Desktop computer.
  2. Characteristics of a desktop computer Uses of a desktop computer including office and business management, education, gaming and entertainment.
  3. Mobile computers.
  4. Characteristics of mobile computers including laptop computers, smartphones, tablet and phablet computers Uses of mobile computers including office and business management, education, gaming, entertainment and remotely controlled devices Advantages and disadvantages of the different types of computer including portability and expandability.

Lesson Note

Recommend-and-justify questions are a staple of ICT exams, and this topic supplies the raw material for them. The marks go to students who do not just describe a device but match its strengths to the needs in the question, for example portability for a travelling sales rep or expandability for a gaming enthusiast. Learn the trade-offs and these marks become straightforward.
