Experimental Design

Overview

Good chemistry depends on good measurement. Choosing the right piece of apparatus, and using the right words to describe a mixture, is the difference between a reliable result and a meaningless one. These are the practical foundations that every other experiment in the course rests on.

In this lesson you will learn which apparatus to use for measuring time, temperature, mass and volume, how to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of different methods, and the precise meanings of solvent, solute, solution, saturated solution, residue and filtrate. Getting this language exactly right earns easy marks throughout the exam.

Objectives

  1. Name appropriate apparatus for the measurement of time, temperature, mass and volume, including: (a) stop-watches (b) thermometers (c) balances (d) burettes (e) volumetric pipettes (f) measuring cylinders (g) gas syringes.
  2. Suggest advantages and disadvantages of experimental methods and apparatus.
  3. Describe a: (a) solvent as a substance that dissolves a solute (b) solute as a substance that is dissolved in a solvent (c) solution as a mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent (d) saturated solution as a solution containing the maximum concentration of a solute dissolved in the solvent at a specified temperature (e) residue as a substance that remains after evaporation, distillation, filtration or any similar process (f) filtrate as a liquid or solution that has passed through a filter.

Lesson Note

Every numerical result in chemistry comes from a measurement, and every measurement comes from a choice of apparatus. Pick a measuring cylinder when you needed a pipette, and your titration is wrong before you start. Examiners test this practical judgement directly, and they also test whether you can use the standard vocabulary of solutions precisely.
