Networks

Overview

Every time you stream a video, send a message or print to a shared office printer, a hidden chain of devices is quietly moving your data from one machine to another. A network is simply two or more devices joined together so they can share data and resources, and the moment computers are connected they need rules and special hardware to decide where each piece of data should go. Understanding that hardware is what separates someone who just uses a network from someone who can explain and fix one.

In this lesson you will meet the devices that build a network: the NIC that gives a machine its identity, the hub and switch that join devices into a local network, the bridge that links two such networks, and the router that connects you to the wider internet. You will see how Wi-Fi and Bluetooth carry data without wires, how cloud storage keeps your files on distant servers, and how a LAN, a WLAN and a WAN differ in size and purpose. By the end you will be able to describe each device and choose the right one for a given situation.

  8. The characteristics, uses and issues relating to cloud computing How data is stored, managed and shared using cloud computing Advantages and disadvantages of using cloud storage compared to other methods.
  9. Common network environments.
  10. Characteristics, uses and purpose of an extranet, intranet and the internet The differences and similarities between an extranet, intranet and the internet.
  11. Network types.
  12. Local Area Network (LAN), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Wide Area Network (WAN) and the differences between these networks.

Lesson Note

Almost no computer works completely alone any more. Homes, schools and businesses all depend on networks to share printers, files and an internet connection, and the questions Cambridge asks in Paper 1 are rarely about whether a network exists. They are about which device does which job, why a switch is more secure than a hub, or how a router gets your data across the world. Learn the role of each piece of hardware clearly and these answers become easy marks rather than guesswork.
