Matrix Operations

Overview

A matrix is a rectangular grid of numbers that lets you store and manipulate a whole table of data, such as a set of sports results or a system of coordinates, using a single algebraic object. Once the rules for combining matrices are fixed, matrices become a compact way to represent information that would otherwise take rows of separate equations.

This topic covers representing data as a matrix, adding and multiplying matrices (including the surprising fact that order matters), multiplying by a scalar, the identity and zero matrices, and finding the determinant and inverse of a 2 by 2 matrix.

Objectives

  1. Represent data by a matrix
  2. Perform addition and multiplication of matrices of order not more than 3 x 3
  3. Multiply a matrix by a scalar
  4. Understand and use unit (identity) matrix and zero (null) matrix of order not more than 3 x 3
  5. Find determinants and inverses of non-singular 2 x 2 matrices

Lesson Note

A matrix is a rectangular array of numbers arranged in rows and columns, enclosed in brackets. A matrix with m rows and n columns has order \(m \times n\) (rows are always stated first). The individual numbers are called elements. Matrices are a natural way to store tabulated data: a sports results table, a set of coordinates, or the coefficients of a system of equations can all be written as a single matrix.
