Magnetism

Overview

Hold two magnets close and you feel something push back through empty air. Nothing touches, yet the force is real and you can map exactly where it acts and which way it points.

In this lesson you will learn what a magnetic field line means, how to plot the field around a bar magnet and between two of them, and how a pair of magnets can be arranged to give a region where the field is the same everywhere.

Objectives

  1. Understand the term magnetic field line
  2. Investigate the magnetic field pattern for a permanent bar magnet and between two bar magnets
  3. Describe how to use two permanent magnets to produce a uniform magnetic field pattern

Lesson Note

A fridge magnet clings to steel without being pushed. Two magnets brought together the wrong way round refuse to meet, sliding sideways out of your fingers. These are forces acting at a distance, with nothing visible in between, and physics describes them by mapping the space around the magnet rather than the magnet itself.
