Potential Risks To Data And Personal Information

Overview

Every time you log in to an account, make a payment, or send a message, your data travels through networks where it could be intercepted, corrupted, or stolen. Understanding the threats that digital information faces is the first step to keeping it safe.

In this lesson you will explore the main risks to data and personal information, from malware and phishing to accidental deletion. You will learn how firewalls, encryption, backups, and secure payment systems work together to protect users and organisations in a connected world.

Objectives

  1. Be aware of risks to data and information: unauthorised access, deliberate damage by malware, accidental deletion, theft of personal data including phishing and pharming
  2. Know about methods available to secure data and personal information online: firewalls, encryption, passwords, PIN, biometrics, CAPTCHA tests, security questions, anti-malware, anti-virus, anti-adware, anti-spyware, access rights, file permissions, secure websites, not opening email attachments or following web links, backup procedures
  3. Know about online payment systems, third party payment systems, bank cards, contactless payment using NFC and how payments are protected

Lesson Note

In 2017, a single ransomware attack called WannaCry locked files on over 200,000 computers across 150 countries in a matter of hours. Hospitals cancelled operations, factories stopped production, and businesses lost access to years of records. The attack exploited a known vulnerability that a simple software update would have fixed. Stories like this show why understanding digital threats is not optional: anyone who uses a computer needs to know what the risks are and how to defend against them.
