General Properties Of Waves

Overview

Waves carry energy across a room, an ocean or the empty space between stars, yet they leave the matter they pass through more or less where it was. Ripples on a pond, a sound across a hall and light from the Sun are all waves obeying the same handful of rules.

In this lesson you will learn the vocabulary of waves (wavefront, wavelength, frequency, crest, trough, amplitude and wave speed), use the wave equation \(v=f\lambda\) to link them, and see what makes a wave transverse. These ideas underpin everything that follows about light, sound and the electromagnetic spectrum.

Objectives

  1. Know that waves transfer energy without transferring matter
  2. Describe what is meant by wave motion as illustrated by vibrations in ropes and springs, and by experiments using water waves
  3. Describe the features of a wave in terms of wavefront, wavelength, frequency, crest (peak), trough, amplitude and wave speed
  4. Recall and use the equation for wave speed v = f λ
  5. Know that for a transverse wave, the direction of vibration is at right angles to the direction of propagation and understand that electromagnetic radiation, water waves and seismic S-waves (secondary) can be modelled as transverse

Lesson Note

A wave is nature's way of moving energy without moving matter along with it. The same description fits a ripple, a guitar string, a radio signal and a beam of light, so the words and the equation you learn here unlock the whole of the waves section of the course.
