Terms, Factors And Coefficients

Overview

Before you can manipulate an algebraic expression, you need to read it correctly. Terms, factors and coefficients are the basic vocabulary of algebra, the parts of speech that let you describe exactly what an expression is made of and how its pieces fit together.

In this lesson you will identify the terms, factors and coefficients of an expression, and interpret expressions in context. Getting this vocabulary right is the foundation for collecting like terms, factorizing, and every algebraic technique that follows.

Objectives

  1. Identify the terms, factors and coefficients of an algebraic expression and interpret expressions in context.

Lesson Note

Algebra has a grammar, and terms, factors and coefficients are its core words. Knowing precisely which part of an expression is a term and which is a factor lets you collect like terms, factorize, and substitute correctly. This vocabulary is assumed throughout the rest of the algebra you will study.
