Impact Of The Internet On Individuals

Overview

The internet has reshaped almost every part of daily life, from the way people find work and learn new skills to the way they socialise and spend their free time. Some of these changes have opened up opportunities that would have seemed impossible a generation ago, while others have introduced risks that did not previously exist.

In this lesson you will explore how the internet affects employment, working practices, access to information and services, and social behaviour. You will also learn how to stay safe online and understand the lasting trail that every click and post leaves behind.

Objectives

  1. Know about the impact on employment, such as new job opportunities as the nature of a job changes, new skills requirements, potential job loss
  2. Understand the impact on working practices, including collaborative working and flexible or mobile working
  3. Know about better access to information and services, new ways of learning, and the wider range of entertainment and leisure opportunities
  4. Know about social impacts such as reduced social interaction, increases in cyberbullying, reduced physical activity
  5. Understand how to stay safe online

Lesson Note

Think about how you found out about your last school assignment, booked a train ticket, or caught up with a friend who lives abroad. Chances are the internet was involved at every step. It has become the invisible infrastructure behind work, learning, shopping, and entertainment, and understanding its impact on individuals is a core part of the Edexcel ICT specification.
