Section B

Overview

Half of Paper 1 is one piece of your own writing. You choose one task from three, you have about an hour, and it is worth 40 marks, exactly as much as the five reading questions put together. No reading is required and no source is provided. What is being measured is simply whether you can write well, and the mark scheme is unusually honest about what that means: 30 marks for communication, sentence control and organisation, and 10 marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar.

This lesson takes each of the three task types the specification names, shows what a top band answer does that a middle band answer does not, and performs the improvement on real paragraphs rather than describing it. You will also learn the two things candidates most often get wrong before they have written a word: choosing the wrong task, and starting without a shape.

Objectives

  1. The writing section will consist of three tasks from which students choose one: descriptive/imaginative/ argumentative or discursive.

Lesson Note

Section B of Paper 1 is composition. The specification says the section will consist of three tasks from which students choose one: descriptive, imaginative, argumentative or discursive. Every paper measured for this lesson obeyed that exactly, and did something slightly more helpful than the specification promises. On all three Paper 1 papers checked, the three tasks were one description, one discussion of a statement, and one story. You are not gambling on which types will appear. You can prepare all three and still know that at least one of your prepared shapes will be on the paper.
