Evaluating Ideas, Opinions And Viewpoint
Overview
It is one thing to understand what a writer says; it is another to judge it. Evaluating means weighing a writer's ideas and opinions: asking whether the argument really holds, whether the evidence is strong, where the writer is biased, and how two writers who disagree stack up against each other. This is the skill that separates a competent reader from a critical one, and it is rewarded directly in the highest reading bands of the directed-writing task.
This lesson shows you how to move from listing what the texts say to evaluating it: separating fact from opinion, spotting a writer's viewpoint and bias, and judging how convincing an argument is. You will see a weak, list-everything answer rebuilt into a probing, evaluative one, study an annotated model paragraph that weighs two conflicting views, and practise on a real-style directed-writing task with a model answer and the actual mark-scheme criteria. Learn to question what you read, with evidence, and you unlock the top of the reading mark scheme.
