English Language Specification A - 4EA1 PearsonEdexcel

Writing Articles And Reviews

Overview

Section B hands you a brief and nothing else. No source text, no extract to borrow from, no material except what you can invent in forty five minutes. That is the whole difficulty and the whole opportunity: 45 marks, exactly half the paper, awarded for a piece of writing that did not exist when you sat down.

This note covers two of the six transactional forms the specification names: the article for a magazine or newspaper, and the review. They share an engine, which is a point of view, and they differ in what they owe the reader. You will learn how to find an angle in ninety seconds, how to open without wasting a paragraph, how to invent detail that sounds researched, and how to end a review with a verdict somebody could act on.

Objectives

  1. Develop transactional writing skills for a variety of purposes and audiences
  2. Write articles for a magazine or newspaper
  3. Write reviews

Lesson Note

One writing task, chosen from two prompts, worth 45 marks. You are advised to spend forty five minutes on it. Each prompt supplies a given audience, form or purpose, and the six transactional forms the specification names are the article for a magazine or newspaper, the speech, the letter, the guide, the review and the text of a leaflet.
