Imaginative Writing Craft

Overview

Two candidates write about the same evening in the same room and one of them is unreadable. The difference is almost never the idea. It is what happens at the level of the sentence: which noun was chosen, where the full stop landed, whether the reader was told a thing or shown it, and whether anybody proofread the result.

This note is the toolkit. Openings that start the reader in the right place, sensory detail that is precise rather than plentiful, control of time so that a minute can occupy a page, dialogue that carries weight, endings that stop rather than explain, and the unglamorous discipline of planning and proofreading under exam conditions. These techniques serve any imaginative task, narrative or descriptive, in Section B or in coursework.

Objectives

  1. Communicate effectively and imaginatively, adapting form, tone and register of writing for specific purposes and audiences
  2. Write clearly, using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures, with appropriate paragraphing and accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation

Lesson Note

Section B is thirty marks: eighteen for AO4 and twelve for AO5. It is worth reading what those two objectives say, because candidates routinely aim at something else entirely.
